Green Walls as Retrofitting Measure: Influence on Energy Performance of Existing Industrial Buildings in Central Italy

نویسندگان

چکیده

Industrial buildings in Italy are currently highly energy intensive. Their old age prevents them from complying with current environmental and requirements; consequently, redevelopment initiatives should therefore be considered order to improve the overall performances of these facilities. Within this framework, research aims evaluate results achievable by introducing indirect green façades as retrofitting solutions. Starting a real case study building located central Italy, simulations were carried out using DesignBuilder, varying buildings’ geometry, dimensions windows-to-wall ratios well greenery coverage percentage. The evidence shows an appreciable potential for walls summer performance industrial buildings, they resulted reduction cooling demand during season about 14%. Moreover, external surface temperature was reduced 8 °C hottest days, ensuring higher durability components. Furthermore, indoor air design week decreased 0.6 °C. During winter season, avoid exploiting free solar gains due incident radiation, slight increase 4% occurred heating needs. For reason, implementation deciduous vegetation species evaluated Mediterranean latitudes.

Remarks on the green retrofitting of historic buildings in Italy

Latest European Union programs related to energy efficiency underline the need for retrofitting existing buildings, which are responsible for 40% of EU final energy consumption. Although new buildings can be constructed with high performance levels, the majority of the building stock, characterized by a low energy performance, still needs renovation. Thanks to its potential to deliver high ener...

Seismic Retrofitting of Existing Shear Walls by Means of High Performance Rc Jacket

A new technique for the strengthening of existing R/C shear walls based on the application of very thin high performance jackets is presented in this paper. The strengthening jacket is made of high performance concrete and high strength steel mesh. The experimental study on a 1:3 scale R/C wall, proportioned to resist the vertical loads only, and reinforced by means of a 15 mm thick high perfor...

Energy saving performance of green vegetation on LEED certified buildings

Sustainable building practices can considerably reduce building’s environmental impact in energy consumption. Covering a building envelope with green vegetation, such as green roof and green wall, is considered a sustainable construction practice, as green vegetation has a positive performance in energy savings. It reduces heat flux and solar reflectivity, generates evaporative cooling, increas...
